About the receiver:

  • The Personal Video Recorder (PVR) Model 5900, with its 120 Gig hard disk drive, combines an integrated digital satellite receiver and Personal Video Recorder.

  • This receiver allows you to pause live TV, watch a pre-recorded show while you are recording another one, fast-forward through commercials and completely redefine your viewing habits around what you like instead of what the broadcasters like.

  • Since this receivers records digital programming in digital format (on a hard disk drive), the quality of what you record is absolutely perfect - you can therefore say goodbye to VHS tapes and SLP recording forever!

  • The integrated hard disk drive lets you record up to 80 hrs (depending on what you record)!

(Above image depicts 5100 receiver - The 5100 is similar to the 5900 except for the remote control)

About the user interface:

  • The 5920 has the latest interface made available to satellite receivers, where you can browse your guide and still see what's going on in the show you were watching: The image of your show gets cropped to about 1/5th of the screen size while the guide fills up the rest of your screen.
  • When you select a new channel the receiver will switch to that channel, or if you press Cancel, you will go back to your show without loosing 1 second or annoying others watching TV with you.
  • The quality of the graphics and the speed at which the receiver can browse makes paper guides virtually useless (unless you like to plan more than 3 days ahead of schedule).

Search Feature:

Your favourite events can now be found using the PVR Search feature. Use a key word such as "football", the name of an actor, or a show title such as "The Osbournes". Entering this key information via The Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) on the 5900 system enables the PVR to gather the information you are seeking.

There are two ways to access this feature:

  • Pressing the # sign key on your remote control will automatically bring up the Search screen.
  • Search has been added to the Themes option and can be accessed by pressing the left arrow key while in view mode or Menu 2.

Entering the key word for your search can be done in 2 ways:

  • By using the on screen keyboard and using the directional arrow keys on the remote to scroll through the characters. Pressing the select key will place the highlighted character in the selection box. In French, accented characters ( ie - á, ç and È) are automatically available when you select the corresponding character in English.
  • A quicker and easier way is to use the numeric key pad on your remote control (like on a cell phone). By simply pressing the number that corresponds with the character you are looking at, you can spell out key search words instantly.

A History Screen has been developed to work with this Search Feature on the 5900. It allows the viewer to easily access all previous searches. This is great when you are an avid viewer of a particular type of event and perform searches frequently.

Go to our 5900 Interface Demo Page for a complete interface demonstration of this receiver.
